House Passes Nolan Amendment to Protect US Iron Ore & Steel Industry
The U.S. House of Representatives last night passed Congressman Rick Nolan’s bipartisan amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to reaffirm that a strong domestic iron ore and steel industry is vital to our national security. The NDAA as amended is expected to come up for final passage on Friday.
“Our amendment sends a message of support to America’s iron ore and steel workers – and a message to trade cheater nations that illegal steel dumping will stop,” Nolan said. “It also tells the World Trade Organization that we will protect our ‘essential security interests’ under Article 21 of the GATT agreement on trade.”
The Department of Homeland Security has determined that if Great Lakes iron ore and steel shipments were to be halted due to a catastrophic failure from obsolescence or a military or terrorist attack at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the United States economy would collapse into another Great Depression and 11 million workers would lose their jobs.
