Nolan Applauds Republican Sens. Collins’ and Murkowski’s Pledges to Vote Against Confirmation of Betsy DeVos
U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan released the following statement regarding pledges from Republican Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) to vote against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education:
“I’m pleased that Senators Collins and Murkowski have joined us in the effort to protect public education,” Nolan said. “Last week I publicly urged President Trump to withdraw the nomination because as a father, grandfather, former teacher and member of the new Congressional Public Education Caucus, I am gravely concerned by Betsy DeVos’s lack of commitment to public education. She has clearly demonstrated that she has neither the commitment to the best public education for our children, nor the experience, knowledge of and respect for federal law necessary to succeed as Secretary of the Department of Education.”
The Republican Senators’ announcement means the vote is likely at a 50/50 tie, with Vice President Pence serving as the tie-breaker. One more “NO” vote from a Republican could result in the Senate’s rejection of DeVos’s appointment.
