Isanti-Chisago County Star: Letter to the Editor: Nolan fights for affordable higher education
As a current college student, I understand the importance of affordable college education. The debt many students acquire while paying exorbitant college tuition rates makes it difficult for them to buy homes, start families and get ahead in life. To ensure that Americans have access to affordable higher education, we need representatives in Washington who have concrete plans to address this problem.
Rick Nolan is a steady supporter of legislation that would make higher education more affordable. He is a co-sponsor of America’s College Promise Act – this law would work with institutions of higher education to provide students with two years of college education at no cost.
Representative Nolan has also supported bipartisan legislation that reauthorizes and increases funding for the Perkins Career and Technical Education Program – providing funding for secondary and postsecondary education that equips students with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to succeed in high-need and technical career fields.
Additionally, Representative Nolan and several of his colleagues introduced the Underwater Student Borrowers Act to allow student loan borrowers who have been granted debt relief as a result of consistent repayment an exemption from being taxed on the amount forgiven.
He is also a cosponsor of legislative measure H.R.1131 – the Fairness in Student Loan Lending Act. This legislation would allow student loan borrowers to refinance at the end of each month to a rate equal to the 10-year Treasury note plus one percent, potentially saving borrowers thousands of dollars.
With the costs of higher education on the rise, it is vital that we have a representative in Washington who is aware of the problems that unaffordable education causes for our community members. Representative Nolan is someone who has fought and will continue to fight for the affordable education that students need to get a fair start in life.
